Economic Development

The majority of the area's income is a result of employment in light manufacturing and service industries.  Whiteman Air Force Base employs approximately 3,524 persons.  Per Capita income (from all sources) for the area is $13,988.  The current poverty rate is $12,604.  As of January 1992, unemployment averaged 7.7 percent, compared to a statewide average of 7 percent.  Only 12 percent of the total population is between the ages of 19 and 24, showing a desperate need to create jobs to stop the out-migration of youth.

Retention of existing business, combined with an expansion of small businesses and development of a tourism and recreation industry, would create an environment for enhanced employment opportunities.

Providing nationwide transportation of products is also a feasible and viable means of improving the area.  An emphasis on small business development and tourism could also mean an increase in mainstream projects in communities with the area, as well as preservation of local heritage and historical sites.  This would lead to increased income for these communities, and would also promote a sense of community.
