Partners On Parenting
What is the purpose of this project: In
1998 Partners on Parenting (POP), a mentoring program for teenage parents was
established in Livingston County to improve the health of pregnant teenage
mothers, her fetus and the babies. POP also encourages father involvement and
educating teen parents to be economically sufficient and to succeed in a
healthy environment. Through this one-on-one mentoring program, the teens have
weekly contact with a positive role model parent who listens, guides, teaches,
encourages healthy positive parenting. A monthly workshop for the teen parent
and their mentor provides a collaboration of local health services as well as
the March of Dimes Birth Defects Foundation. Education about pregnancy, birth
defects, childbirth, positive parenting skills, prevention of another teen
pregnancy, life skills and others are presented through literature, brochures,
videos and guest speakers at the monthly workshops. One-on-one discussions and
group activities encourages learning as well as self esteem in feeling accepted
and wanted, forming a bonding relationship. Quarterly luncheons focus on
support and the programs effectiveness.

Why is the project Needed: Children in the county continue to live
in poverty at 18.5%. This program will educate teen mothers on health risk to
herself and her baby, educate teenagers to take responsibility for their
actions and the consequences that follow. Statistics prove mentoring works!! It
improves school attendance, academic achievements and provides support for
positive behavior. Partners On Parenting will place strong emphasis on
pregnancy prevention, prevention of tobacco, alcohol and other drugs to all
teens. Teen parents will also be educated on early prenatal care, nutrition,
the prevention of birth defects and postponing another teen pregnancy.
