Elk Farmers Association
Missouri Elk Farmers Association Project
The Green Hills RC&D Council supports alternative farm enterprises.

Raising North American Elk is a growing industry in Missouri and the Green Hills RC&D is helping the industry grow. The RC&D has partnered with the Association to secure funding for a market study. The study will evaluate the optional capacity of elk products production based on target market niches, demand for elk meat and the availability of resources. An important aspect of the study is the potential for job creation in the rural area. North American Elk can offer the small to mid size farmer an alternative to raising livestock and an opportunity to improve net income. There are currently 90 to 100 elk producers in Missouri and a good majority of them live in the Green Hills region. Developing the elk market can help Missouri producers not only sell in Missouri, but also expand their markets out of state and the export market. The RC&D Council has applied for a Rural Business Enterprise Grant through the Rural Development Administration.
