Carter County was organized from parts of Ripley and Shannon counties on March 10, 1859. It was named for Zimri A. Carter who was an early pioneer settler. The county seat is Van Buren which was originally established as the seat of Ripley County in 1833.

Mission:

The Carter County Historical Commission was formed to procure, preserve, and interpret the history and cultural heritage of Carter County, Missouri for the benefit of the public and posterity.

Goals:

The Carter County Historical Commission is now incorporated with the state of Missouri.  They publish a calendar every year with historical photographs of Carter County as a fund raiser.  The Calendars are on sale at various businesses around the county.

Meetings are generally the first Tuesday of the month at 3:30 PM at the National Park Service Headquarters in Van Buren,

The Big Springs RC&D has assisted the Commission with filing incorporation papers, setting up the corporation, grant research and calendar publications.
